Finasteride
Important Safety Information
Finasteride is a prescription medication used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men and for male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). Your safety is our first priority. Finasteride is not FDA-approved for use in women or children.
Do not take Finasteride if you:
- Are pregnant or may become pregnant. Finasteride can cause birth defects. Women who are or may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken tablets.
- Are allergic to finasteride or any of the ingredients in the medication.
Warnings and Precautions:
- Finasteride may increase the risk of high-grade prostate cancer. Your doctor may perform regular prostate exams and monitor PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels.
- Finasteride can affect a blood test called PSA, which is used to screen for prostate cancer. Be sure to tell your doctor you are taking finasteride before having this test.
- If treatment is discontinued, any therapeutic effects will be reversed within 12 months.
Before you take Finasteride, tell your healthcare provider if you:
- Have liver disease.
- Have problems urinating or a history of urinary tract obstruction.
- Have ever had prostate cancer or abnormal PSA levels.
- Are taking other medications, including herbal supplements.
Finasteride can cause side effects. Serious side effects include:
- Breast lumps, pain, or nipple discharge (may be signs of male breast cancer).
- Pain in the testicles.
- Depression and, in rare cases, suicidal thoughts.
- Sexual side effects such as:
- Decreased libido
- Trouble having or maintaining an erection
- Decreased amount of semen
Some of these sexual side effects may continue after stopping Finasteride. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have concerns.
Common side effects of Finasteride may include:
- Decreased sex drive
- Trouble getting or keeping an erection
- Decreased amount of semen released during sex
- Breast enlargement or tenderness
- Skin rash
If you experience signs or symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, or face, or difficulty breathing, stop taking Finasteride and seek medical attention immediately.
Note: Finasteride is for use by men only and should not be used by women or children. Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children.
