Topical Finasteride

Your safety is our first priority. Learn more about key medication details, side effects, and other important information about your treatment.

Important Safety Information

Topical Finasteride is a medication used off-label to treat hair loss, such as androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern hair loss). It works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the scalp, which helps reduce hair loss and promote regrowth.

Topical Finasteride is not FDA-approved for all uses and is typically used under medical supervision.

Do not use Topical Finasteride if you:

  • Are a woman who is or may become pregnant. Finasteride can cause birth defects in a male fetus.
  • Are allergic to finasteride or any other ingredients in the topical formulation.
  • Are under 18 years of age.

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid any contact with the medication, especially broken or leaking containers, due to the risk of absorption through the skin and potential harm to a male fetus.
  • Do not apply topical finasteride to broken or irritated skin.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after applying the medication to avoid unintentional exposure to others, especially children and women of childbearing age.
  • Tell your healthcare provider if you have liver problems or other medical conditions before starting treatment.
  • Use topical finasteride exactly as prescribed. Do not exceed the recommended dose or frequency.

Possible Side Effects

Topical Finasteride may cause side effects, though they tend to be less common than with oral finasteride. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience any of the following:

  • Skin irritation, redness, itching, or rash at the application site.
  • Unusual breast tenderness, enlargement, or nipple discharge.
  • Changes in sexual function such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or ejaculation problems.
  • Signs of an allergic reaction including rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or difficulty breathing.

Before Using Topical Finasteride, Tell Your Healthcare Provider If You:

  • Have any liver disease or other significant health issues.
  • Are using other medications or topical products on your scalp.

Important Notes:

  • It may take several months of consistent use before results are seen.
  • Topical finasteride is intended for external use only and should not be ingested.
  • Keep the medication out of reach of children.
  • This medication does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Drug Interactions

Inform your healthcare provider of all other medications and supplements you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

Common Side Effects Include:

  • Scalp irritation or dryness
  • Mild itching or redness at the application site
  • Occasional sexual side effects (less common than oral finasteride)

If you experience any concerning side effects or have questions about topical finasteride, please consult your healthcare provider.
