Tretinoin

Your safety is our first priority. Learn more about key medication details, side effects, and other important information about your treatment.

Important Safety Information

Tretinoin is a prescription topical medication used to treat acne and reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles, dark spots, and rough skin. It is a derivative of vitamin A and belongs to a class of medications called retinoids. Common brand names include Retin-A®, Renova®, and Altreno®.

Tretinoin should only be used under the guidance of a licensed healthcare provider.

Do Not Use Tretinoin If You:

  • Are allergic to tretinoin or any of its ingredients
  • Have eczema or other skin conditions causing severe irritation or sensitivity
  • Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  • Are using products that may cause skin irritation (e.g., harsh cleansers, astringents, or other acne treatments)

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Skin Irritation: May cause redness, dryness, peeling, burning, or increased sensitivity, especially during the first few weeks of treatment.
  • Sun Sensitivity: Increases your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight and UV rays. Use sunscreen (SPF 30+), wear protective clothing, and avoid tanning beds.
  • Photosensitivity: Avoid excessive sun exposure and citrus-based skincare products that can increase photosensitivity.
  • Avoid Harsh Products: Do not use abrasive scrubs, alcohol-based toners, or products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid unless directed.
  • Pregnancy Warning: Should not be used during pregnancy. Use effective contraception and consult your doctor if you become pregnant.

Possible Side Effects

Seek medical attention immediately if you experience:

  • Severe skin burning, blistering, or swelling
  • Signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling of the face/tongue/throat, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing)

Common Side Effects May Include:

  • Redness or dryness of the skin
  • Mild peeling or flaking
  • Skin stinging or burning
  • Changes in skin color (lightening or darkening)
  • Increased sensitivity to weather extremes (cold or wind)

Before Using Tretinoin, Tell Your Healthcare Provider If You:

  • Have sensitive skin, eczema, or rosacea
  • Are using other acne medications or exfoliating agents
  • Are exposed to sunlight frequently or use tanning beds
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding

Drug & Product Interactions

Inform your healthcare provider about all topical and oral medications you use, especially:

  • Other acne treatments (e.g., benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid)
  • Products containing sulfur, resorcinol, or alcohol
  • Medicated or abrasive soaps and cleansers
  • Hair removal products or chemical depilatories

Administration & Storage:

  • Apply tretinoin exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at bedtime.
  • Cleanse the skin gently, then wait 20–30 minutes before applying.
  • Use a pea-sized amount for the entire face—more may cause irritation.
  • Do not apply to broken, sunburned, or eczematous skin.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes.
  • Store at room temperature, away from heat, light, and moisture.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

If you experience side effects or have questions about your treatment, contact your healthcare provider promptly. Do not discontinue use without medical advice.
