Important Safety Information
Bupropion is a prescription medication used to treat depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and to help people stop smoking (smoking cessation). It may be marketed under various brand names such as Wellbutrin® or Zyban®.
Bupropion should only be used under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider.
Do not take Bupropion if you:
- Have a seizure disorder or a history of seizures
- Have an eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia
- Are taking or have recently taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
- Are abruptly stopping alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or anti-seizure medications
- Are allergic to bupropion or any of its ingredients
Warnings and Precautions:
- Bupropion may increase the risk of seizures, especially at higher doses.
- There is a risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors, particularly in young adults and adolescents. Monitor mood and behavior closely, especially when starting treatment or changing the dose.
- Use caution if you have high blood pressure, liver or kidney problems, or a history of mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder.
- Do not exceed the prescribed dose, and do not take more than one bupropion-containing product at a time.
Possible Side Effects
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:
- Seizures
- Chest pain or irregular heartbeat
- Severe headache or vision changes
- Confusion, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts
- Rash, itching, or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat
Common Side Effects May Include:
- Dry mouth
- Insomnia or trouble sleeping
- Dizziness
- Weight loss
- Headache
- Anxiety or agitation
- Sweating
Before Taking Bupropion, Tell Your Healthcare Provider If You:
- Have a history of seizures or head trauma
- Drink alcohol regularly
- Have liver or kidney disease
- Have a history of mental health issues, including bipolar disorder or suicidal thoughts
- Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
Drug Interactions
Tell your provider about all the medications and supplements you take, including:
- Other antidepressants
- Antipsychotic medications
- Seizure medications
- MAO inhibitors
- Over-the-counter supplements and herbal remedies (e.g., St. John’s Wort)
Administration & Storage:
- Take exactly as prescribed, with or without food.
- Swallow tablets whole—do not crush, chew, or split.
- Store at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
