Important Safety Information

Dutasteride is a prescription medication used primarily to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate.

Dutasteride is not FDA-approved for use in women or children.

Do not take Dutasteride if you:

  • Are a woman who is or may become pregnant. Dutasteride can cause birth defects in a male fetus.
  • Are allergic to dutasteride or any ingredients in the medication.

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Pregnant women should avoid handling Dutasteride capsules, especially if broken or leaking, due to the risk of absorption through the skin.
  • Do not donate blood while taking Dutasteride and for at least 6 months after stopping treatment to prevent blood transfusion to a pregnant woman.
  • Dutasteride may affect the results of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests used for prostate cancer screening. Inform your healthcare provider that you are taking Dutasteride before any PSA tests.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver problems before starting Dutasteride, as dosage adjustments may be necessary.

Possible Side Effects

Dutasteride can cause serious side effects. Contact your healthcare provider right away if you experience any of the following:

  • Breast lumps, pain, nipple discharge, or breast enlargement.
  • Signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing.
  • Sexual side effects including decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or ejaculation disorders.

Before Taking Dutasteride, Tell Your Healthcare Provider If You:

  • Have liver disease.
  • Are taking any other medications, including prescription, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, or herbal supplements.

Important Notes:

  • Dutasteride may take several months to show benefit in improving urinary symptoms related to enlarged prostate.
  • Continue taking Dutasteride even if you do not notice immediate symptom improvement unless your healthcare provider tells you otherwise.
  • Dutasteride is not a treatment for prostate cancer and should not be used as such.

Drug Interactions

Inform your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, as Dutasteride may interact with other drugs.

Additional Information

Dutasteride does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Common Side Effects Include:

  • Impotence
  • Decreased libido
  • Ejaculation disorders
  • Breast tenderness or enlargement
