Important Safety Information
Metformin ER (Extended Release) is a prescription medication used to manage blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of drugs called biguanides. Metformin works by helping your body respond better to insulin, decreasing the amount of sugar made by the liver, and improving absorption of sugar by muscles.
Metformin ER is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. It should be used under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider.
Do Not Take Metformin ER If You:
- Are allergic to metformin or any of its ingredients
- Have severe kidney problems or significantly reduced kidney function
- Have a condition called metabolic acidosis (including diabetic ketoacidosis)
- Are scheduled for a procedure involving contrast dye (such as a CT scan), unless your provider advises it is safe
Warnings and Precautions:
- Lactic Acidosis: A rare but serious condition caused by a buildup of lactic acid in the blood. Symptoms include unusual tiredness, muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach discomfort, slow heart rate, or feeling cold. Seek immediate medical help if you experience these symptoms.
- Kidney Function: Kidney health must be monitored before and during treatment. The risk of lactic acidosis increases if your kidneys are not working properly.
- Liver Problems: Use caution if you have liver disease, as it may increase the risk of side effects.
- Alcohol Use: Avoid excessive alcohol while taking metformin, as it increases the risk of lactic acidosis.
